I was sitting alone obviously otherwise engaged. I had shown no interest in this specific person, nor had I really seemed distracted or open to being distracted at all for a long period of time, had pages and books sprawled out in front of me (so it's not like there's cleared space for someone) AND it was 7:45 in the morning.

happens to me any time I am out somewhere, park or other such public relaxation spot, and I try to read a book. never fails, someone sits near me and starts it off with "what are you reading?" so I usually say "a book" and try to ignore them.

One time I opened a studying girl in a cafe by stopping at her table on my way back from the counter, gently taking her book and putting it down on the table. "Enough studying, you need a fun break." Or something. To be fair, she glanced up at me several times before I did that though.

I remember last year there was this ...unique.. girl that lived in my dorm. Think "bag lady"-she seemed sweet but a little on the strange side. Short and dumpy with an older looking face to top it off. I was studying for this test in the library and she came over and asked if she could sit down. I kind of felt bad so I said sure go ahead. She then extended her hand and introduced herself (we had already met). After a minute she asked in a rather rude tone what I was studying instead of talking to her. I replied it was an accounting textbook, accounting was my major.

"Why would you study that? Isn't that boring?" (Maybe she was trying a neg, I don't know) She then began a sort of really loud witch's cackle, and people around us started to stare. Could have been a Southwest Airlines Commercial.

Not the most awkward conversation I've ever had, but easily top 10.
