I haven't read the book(s?) but only the first Hellraiser was any good. The concept is great but all the other films sucked.

The second movie I thought was pretty decent for a horror flick. The third was where it starts to suck, although 3 was ok as a cheap blood and guts film, 4-8 are fucking unbearably awful.

2's definitely ok, it's just the whole 'crazy doctor turns into uber-Cenobite' thing. I've never seen any of the straight to DVD ones, but 3 sucked hard. I mean, a dude with a disc-drive face that shoots out CD's, lol...
