I saw this on cinemax for the first time in years...they redubbed it and the dialouge sucks now. Way to crap on a classic.

The first time they dubbed it in English, everything was synched up and the voices matched the characters. This redubb makes it look like the first Godzilla.

This movie is a classic fucking shell out for the DVD (which has equally shitting dubbing but then again you shouldn't be watching it dubbed anyway).

It's a great movie the first time, but the redub is bad. Sounds so lame. Akira is a great movie and should have been treated as such.

I always set anime to English subs if I can, dubs nearly always suck unless it's something like Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust or Afro Samurai and was meant to be in Engrish.

This thread just reminded me of how shitty the dubs in Akira are ::shudder::

I liked Akira. It's not some mindblowing shit like everyone seems to believe, but it was okay.

Grave of the Fireflies remains my favourite anime ever.

Akira annoys me a lot in the sense that it took the rest of the world (i.e. non-Japanese companies) more than a decade to produce a movie that displayed comparable quality in animation. I mean Jesus. Look at Akira and then look at mid to late 90s Disney movies and it's frightening how little effort they put into something like Alladin. Now ~20 years later Akira still looks good by modern standards and those Disney movies (even "remastered") look like garbage.

Yeah but don't forget how much money was spent on it, wasn't it the most expensive animation ever? It was ridiculous, the amount of individual cells that were drawn.

It was very detailed. However according to Wikipedia it was released in 1988 and cost $10,000,000 while Aladdin (my example) was released in 1992 and cost $28,000,000. A four year difference isn't much regarding inflation (usually) so the fact that Aladdin looks like shit and cost over twice as much should say something about the quality of Animation that the rest of the world produces. I'm having difficulty even thinking of cell animated movies that have matched Akira. Titan AE, maybe and that was released in 2000. I really can't think of anything earlier that matched the quality.

Voice talent for Aladdin was far more expensive than for Akira, and that's a huge expense.

Studio Ghibli tend to make awesome traditional animation without blowing huge bucks on it.

I'm going to have to disagree with the cost difference being even most atributeable to voice acting as outside of Robin Williams the cast of Aladdin is a bunch of nobodies.

Agreed. Studio Ghibli produces very good quality animation on a fairly reasonable budget. I could argue that most of their work from the 80s and 90s also surpassed Disney in quality and at a fraction of the production cost. I would however appreciate it if they where more selective in the movies they produced as their two most recent works (Howl's Moving Castle and Tales from Earthsea) haven't been very good when compared to the standards they've already established.
